Background of the Study
Twitter has emerged as a powerful platform for political discourse, offering a space for rapid communication, debate, and mobilization. In Nsukka, Twitter is increasingly used by citizens, political leaders, and activists to express opinions, share news, and debate policy issues (Chinonso, 2023). The platform’s brevity and immediacy facilitate real-time discussions on pressing political matters, making it an essential tool for public engagement (Nneka, 2024). However, challenges such as character limits, the prevalence of misinformation, and echo chambers can constrain the depth and diversity of political debates (Okafor, 2025). This study evaluates Twitter’s effectiveness as a tool for political discourse in Nsukka, analyzing how its features promote or hinder meaningful political communication. The research aims to provide insights into the role of Twitter in shaping political narratives and public opinion, contributing to an improved understanding of digital political engagement.

Statement of the Problem
While Twitter facilitates fast and accessible political discourse, its effectiveness in fostering substantive political debate in Nsukka is questionable. Issues such as misinformation, limited contextual discussion, and the creation of echo chambers undermine the platform’s potential to promote balanced political dialogue (Ifeanyi, 2023). These challenges raise concerns about whether Twitter can truly serve as a tool for informed political discourse. This study seeks to examine these issues, exploring the constraints and opportunities of Twitter in shaping political narratives and public opinion in Nsukka (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate Twitter’s role in facilitating political discourse.

  2. To identify challenges that limit meaningful political dialogue on Twitter.

  3. To recommend strategies to enhance the quality of political discourse on the platform.

Research Questions:

  1. How is Twitter used for political discourse in Nsukka?

  2. What challenges limit substantive discussions on Twitter?

  3. What strategies can improve political communication on Twitter?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Twitter significantly influences political discourse in Nsukka.

  2. Misinformation on Twitter negatively impacts the quality of political debate.

  3. Enhanced user guidelines can improve political discourse on the platform.

Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into Twitter’s role in political discourse, offering recommendations to enhance digital political communication. Its findings will benefit political analysts, digital media practitioners, and policymakers by highlighting strategies to mitigate misinformation and encourage richer, more informed debates on social media (Nwosu, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Twitter usage in Nsukka Local Government and focuses exclusively on its role in political discourse.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Twitter: A microblogging platform used for real-time communication.

  • Political Discourse: The exchange of ideas and opinions about political issues.

Echo Chambers: Situations where beliefs are amplified by repeated communication within a closed group.
